Lalita Babar wins hearts despite losing the medal

Meet Lalita Shivaji Babar, hailing from Satara district in Maharashtra. Lalita is in the news as she finished 10th in the final of the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase at the Rio Olympics. Lalita became the first Indian woman to qualify for an individual Olympic track event final since P.T. Usha.

Though Lalita did not win a medal for the country, it is indeed a great achievement for this young lady who had practised on roads bare feet several years to reach the Olympics. Lalita who is the third daughter of a farmer was encouraged by her parents, teachers, uncle and was provided with necessary help by Mr Prabhakar Deshmukh, IAS.
